One of the most important aspects of understanding courses in MyOMLab and MyStatLab is differentiating between homework assignments and quizzes/ tests.
Homework assignments are quicker tasks that will provide students with immediate feedback. Students are able to save their progress throughout the completion of the assignment.
In addition, the default settings allow students’ access to learning aids, including the “Help Me Solve This” option and eText links. The default settings allow students to work on the Homework assignment questions as many times as preferred until the assigned due date. The only grade that is recorded is the final attempt.
When students finish all parts of an exercise in a homework assignment, they have the opportunity to either Try Again, in which case they can re-do the exact problem, or, if the question is algorithmic, perform a Similar Exercise. As you can see, in the default setting for homework, students should be able to earn a very high grade. Students can earn full credit even if it takes 10 attempts to perfect a homework assignment.
By limiting the number of attempts per homework, instructors are limiting the number of times the student will see the Try Again or Similar Exercise buttons. If instructors choose to limit this number to two attempts, for example, students still have the opportunity to earn full credit on the second attempt. After the homework due date has passed, students may go to their Results tab and practice old homework assignments. This will not affect their pre-recorded grade.
Quizzes and Tests
Quizzes and tests differ in that they are a better assessment of your students real understanding of the material. With quizzes/tests, students take the entire assignment without feedback or the assistance of learning aids. There is no saving progress on a quiz or a test. Rather, students must answer all assignment questions and then submit for grading.
Instructors have the option of setting the number of times students can access the entire assignment. Unlike homework assignments, a student can only receive feedback on a test or quiz once it’s submitted in its entirety. Some instructors choose to disallow feedback until after an assignments’ due date.
If an instructor allows more than one attempt at a quiz or a test, a students’ second attempt will erase all of the first attempts’ answers, scramble the questions, and modify any questions that are algorithmic. When instructors allow students more than one attempt at an assignment, the highest scores are recorded by default. Instructors can change this setting and choose to record the Best Score, Most Recent Score, Average Score or All Scores.
The results of a quiz or test report back to the students study plan, identifying which sections of the book need more study and providing extra practice problems.
