Question from Faculty:

I set up a copy of a test to allow extra time for a particular student. However, the test scores for all students show up in the gradebook in both the original test column and the extended time test column. What did I do wrong?

Answer:

This is a common error with an easy solution. Instead of making a copy of the test in My Course (right hand side of Course Content) which does not create an independent copy, you need to make the copy in the Content Library (left hand side of Course Content) to get an independent duplicate assignment.

If you have students that need to be allowed extra time to complete assignments, you can create a duplicate assignment and only assign it to select students with a longer timeframe to complete. Here is how to do this:

  •  Locate and checkmark the assignment under Content Library in the Course Content Tab
  • Click on Advanced options in the yellow ribbon
  • Click the icon for copy
  • Then click the paste icon and choose paste location
  • Hover over newly copied assignment and left click on the dropdown and choose Edit
  • Update the name of the assignment to differentiate it from the original (i.e. Chapter 1 Quiz Extended Time)
  • Click on the preferences tab and modify the Time required to complete the activity and click Save and Return

Your new assignment is then independent of the original, so you will also need to add it to My Course in the desired folder

Note: You might want to make a special folder for all extended time assignments to avoid confusion on the student side

  • Once in the My Course side– Hover over newly copied assignment again and left click on the dropdown and choose Properties
  • Click on Select Students and change the selection to “Select specific students who should be assigned this item. Only these students will be able to take the test”
  • Check mark the students you are allowing additional time and move them to the Selected Student box using the arrow button between the boxes
  • Save and Close

Only the selected students will be able to access this assignment. All students will be able to access the original. Note: All students can “see” these copied assignments, but students not selected in the properties will receive this message if they try to access it: The activity is not available for this Date/Student.

The gradebook will show grades for the majority of the class under the original assignment and the grade for select students under the extended time assignment. If you want- you can manually add the extended time select student grade to the original assignment column to keep all grades for all students for that activity in one place.

Here is a video walkthrough of this process as well:

Thanks for the question Professor Smith!

I just want to let you know that I have done what Jessica suggests many times, and it works very well.  I put the Extended Time Folder at the end of the course content section; and I call the folder "Extra Folder".  I actually only grant access to the folder to students who have those special needs.  In the gradebook, I REVOKE the grades from student view; I don't want other students, and then manually enter the grades in the correct folder.  I also use this when I give a make-up exam for a student and I don't want to re-adjust all of the scheduling options.
